Have you ever been asked this or heard of this before?

So one of my friends is having her baby shower here soon…she and her mom are asking all guests to bring food AND a gift. I’ve literally never been to a shower that requires this.

It’s called a potluck. A lot of people do it. I asked close family to do it for my wedding and we will be doing it for my baby shower also. It’s an old school thing. I’m personally a huge fan of it. Didn’t realize it was so uncommon. 😂 however do not feel obligated to bring food, they will not hate you if you don’t.

I live in potluck land (upper Midwest Lutheran), and we do potlucks for so much but wouldn’t for a shower. At least not from all of the guests. It might be 4-5 people bringing food that were asked to help out, but not everyone. Even when I want to provide all of the food for a gathering and carefully planned my menu, people show up with food to share.

Our family does pot lucks often. Have done them for showers and birthdays. Some of my Aunts are amazing cooks and everyone always requests their skills.

I've never been asked, however I have ALWAYS offered to bring a dish to basically everything.

Potlucks are really common where I live, but I have never been to a baby shower where that was requested. The ones I have been to had some snacks laid out, or took place in a private room of a restaurant and the restaurant provided food.

So we didn’t necessarily do that for our baby shower but about two months beforehand we asked certain family members to cook a dish for our buffet style menu. It was not required for every guest though.

It's a potluck, pretty common where I'm from. I will say it's really more common when the gathering is family and close friends only, you wouldn't ask that of people that are only acquaintances. It's also the difference between having a "get together" and hosting/entertaining.
