Gossips the most has more friends?

One of my husbands brother (wife) loves talking about everyone and believe me when I say everyone. She can come out to always helping you out and will never deny you a favor. But she loves causing drama in friendships, relationships, she’s always hating. But my understanding is she’s always making friends but she loves gossiping about them and taking shit, none of them no any of this. But how does that even work? I try to do the opposite and mind my business and keep my distance and I feel like I don’t make friends like that. I try my best to be cool with everyone & make a conversation but I feel like I don’t receive anything back. Is there something wrong with me? Should i start doing what she’s doing? Cause im confused how that works.
