How often do you think the father should check up on his kids once parents split , is going a a week or two ok?

Every week.. hell if not everyday! Just a quick text/ call asking how they are!

It depends how old the child is and the mother and father should agree a call schedule. It’s not fair for either parent to demand a call at the last minute as you don’t know what the child is doing at the other house, it’s intrusive.

I think a parent should check up on their kids weekly, at a minimum. In my case, he can go months without checking on them. I kinda like it that way tho because my husband has taken over as their father figure and my ex is weird. I don’t need him giving my kids bs. If he wanted to be in their lives, he would.

A schedule should be discussed. One that is flexible and both parents agree on. 
I’d also not expect that the child would see their relationship with either parent as better or worse depending on how often they’re spending time with that parent. 
The child could live with one parent and dislike them more than the unseen parent. Unfortunately that was my experience, my mother was not the best person and always tried to make everyone else “the bad guy”. 
Always let your children reach their own opinions on people, your influence is never needed.

My husband has a kid from his first marriage, when they split he got custody, her mom called every single day while she was stationed on the other side of the country. The only times she wouldn't call was when she was on a ship and she would communicate to let us know when those times would be!
