How do you respond to this?

Question

What do you say when someone tells you they have been diagnosed with cancer? Or that they love have cancer? It’s something that I never really know how to respond . I always say I’m so sorry but I don’t know if that’s even appropriate or what else to say. Do you also ask what type of cancer or what stage if they don’t tell you ?

Sometimes you just remind them that they’re so strong and you believe that they’re gonna pull out of this stronger than before. And carry on as normal. My step mom has had cancer several times and the best things I do for her is cool, clean the house, and just sitting around watching tv.

Don't ask questions and don't say sorry. Ask them if there is anything they need from you, anything they would like to talk about and let them know if they need someone to talk to that you are available and if they need help to please ask. Tell them you love them.

There isn't much you can say really..
And about asking further questions, that will likely depend a lot on the person and probably also how long they've had to let it sink in. But you can always ask, if it's okay to ask questions or if they would prefer not to talk about it right now.
