I know sometimes my work has late night events, but I havent heard of any events happening these past couple of days. he has a gf and I have a bf!

What’s the content-personal or work related?Never answer them outside of work hours. Unless your job is to be on call all the time.
I have some people message me when I’m not on for me to look at in the morning but don’t expect me to answer then. But it’s a work related question

unless it's work related there's no reason he needs to contact you off work hours. it's considered harassment. one you can ask him to please do not contact you after work hours if he keeps bugging a report is owed.

Discuss this with him and tell him you’d appreciate if he would keep communication within working hours and ensure they are work related messages 
Especially if you know there is no reason for him to be contacting you 
Also if you not expected to be “on call” due to an event taking place where you need to address something you don’t need to respond
