Small mouth newborn and large nipples... help

I'm having the same issue I had with my last child with breastfeeding. Small mouthed baby and large nipples that won't fit. The best advise I've seen is to pump and hand express for a week or so until there is a better fit. How do I avoid nipple confusion (which my previous child had) until then? That child never grew to breastfeed and I had to exclusively pump for her, and my supply never really established. Really trying hard this time to be able to exclusively breastfeed. Any tips are greatly appreciated!
