Lipase milk

Clemen🧸🤎

Yesterday night I gave some breast milk from the freezer to my one year old. And then I tried to give some to my 4 yr old and he didn’t like it. He said “mommy it taste nasty” So I immediately smelled it and it didn’t smell spoiled then I tasted it and it was awful. It tasted like metal or a coin. Now I’m wondering anyone who had a problem with lipase milk? I want to know how to avoid it or fix the problem. I’m currently breastfeeding my 1 1/2 month old.

I struggle with lipase. For me there's a very short window in which I have to freeze it otherwise the lipase gets too high. Basically I have to freeze it immediately if I know I won't use it. And it can stay in the fridge fresh only 24 hours before it turns.

There’s a couple things to try.You can heat the milk right before freezing it. Get it scalding hot (bubbles around the edge but not boiling). Or when you serve the defrosted milk add a drop or two of nonalcoholic vanilla. Or mix half fresh milk with half defrosted milk.

Unfortunately my milk is heavily lipased after freezing and I learned that I absolutely cannot freeze my milk. There was nothing I could do to prevent it from happening and so much of my milk was wasted because I froze so much of it. It smelled so heavy of lipase I couldn't even use it in baths. I tried everything there was to try to prevent it and nothing worked for me. Sometimes there's really nothing you could do other than to not freeze your milk. Pump fresh and keep it in the fridge and try and have the kids drink as much fresh milk as you can get them to drink so it doesn't have to be frozen.

I had this happen with my first. It didn’t seem to bother her so if it doesn’t bother your baby you don’t have to do anything. I figured out that too much flaxseed was my issue. Here’s some helpful info on it from Kelly mom:https://kellymom.com/bf/pumpingmoms/milkstorage/lipase-expressedmilk/
