A few days ago I made a poll asking how you’d pronounce Lhotse if you were a receptionist or something. I was genuinely curious how it would be perceived by the average person. It’s a cultural name that has been handed down in my family for generations and I’d like to use it because of tradition. My family pronounces it Laht-sie, but the mountain in Asia with the same name is pronounced Lote-say. That’s all I wanted to know. Which way would you pronounce it. There’s no wrong answer.

Several ladies on here called the name ridiculous, somebody else called them uncultured for calling it ridiculous, then other not-nice names started being thrown around. I deleted my post and my account because who wants to be in the middle of all the negativity.

But I’m back and asking again, with more context this time, because I really want to know. How would you pronounce Lhotse if you saw it in the wild? Lote-say, Laht-sie, or just Lots, or something else.
