Febrile seizures.

Does anyone have a child who gets them? This flu season has been particularly stressful because our youngest had his first febrile seizure October 2021 at 22 months old and now, he gets one every time we get sick and he develops a high fever. He’s had about 7 or 8 now since last year. It never gets easier to watch. They’re puzzled because he has had so many but because it’s always with a fever & illness, it’s not considered epilepsy.

We have a neurologist on board with us and we have Ativan as a rescue medication just in case the seizure lasts longer than 5 minutes, but that’s all we can really do. It makes me feel helpless as a mother. Most children apparently outgrow them by the age of 5, but that still gives us potentially two more years of this 😔 Does anyone else’s child experience these? How often? How do you cope? Every time we get sick I’m an anxious mess. He just had another yesterday morning and I’ve barely been able to sleep since.

My daughter had 1 when she was just under 1, I'm very diligent on giving her fever reducers before her temp gets to 39 and she hasn't had one since. Hugs momma, it's so hard to watch.

Because my son is sensitive to the temperature increase and not the actual fever itself, there’s no way for me to prevent them. It’s the fever starting which triggers them for him, not the temperature. Often the fever starts in the middle of the night and then even if I give meds, it’s already too late 😞
