When to keep your kid home from school?

Question

I have been told that if I wait for all the coughs and sniffles to be gone, we will never go anywhere. 
Is that the guideline we should use when we are deciding to send our kid back to school after staying home sick. 
My son is in PreK. He goes 2 half days a week. We kept him home his last 2 school days. His cough is mostly gone, no fever, mainly just a runny nose off and on. Do I send him to school tomorrow?  
Please tell me what do teachers and other parents think?

My daughter is in 1st grade their rule of thumb is, if they don’t have a fever, don’t have vomiting or diarrhea and are acting fine other than the cough or runny nose they can go to school. I kept her home twice already for coughing though cuz it was so bad she couldn’t stop .

as long as his fever is gone i think it's fine to send him. you can try giving him some meds to help with his remaining symptoms before sending him but he should be fine.

If he has no fever, no vomiting, and is acting alert and ready for school, he should be ok to go. If he’s snotty and coughing a lot, I recommend having him wear a mask, just in case - it’s respectful of other kids, families, and the teacher. As a teacher myself, I always offer a mask to kids who are coughing a lot.

I don’t keep my son home unless he has had a fever or is vomiting. My child has allergies if I kept him home every time he was sniffling and coughing he would stay home everyday.

My sons daycare asks us to wait until they’re getting noticeably better (usually a couple days) and are feeling well enough to go. It’s so cold here already, if we waited for him not to have a runny nose he would never go to school at all

The state would be after me if I waited for my kids’ cough to be gone—they both hang on to coughs for a solid 2 weeks. I send them if they’re fever-free for 48 hours and feel well enough to go.

Always a hard call. Our 4yr old has reactive airways, so he coughs really hard and wheezes for a long time when he catches something. He had FluA recently, but has been fever free for 2 days now and his nose isn’t a fountain. He is still coughing really hard sometimes, but he will be for weeks probably. He has a nebulizer that we’ll do before he goes to school, but I expect he’ll start to cough a fair bit toward the end of his class time. If we waited for him to stop coughing, he’d never finish 4K.
