20 month old won’t talk - Should I ask his pediatrician?

Question

He only knows “mama” and only says it every so often. But he follows directions and understands words, which I heard is more important. 
Also, my brother has autism and my son’s cousin has autism. 
Should I be worried?

I wouldn’t be stressed but I would definitely be asking about early intervention. 
Is he walking? I’ve heard that speech and walking are often linked. It was definitely the case with my daughter and she was a very late walker.

He could just be delayed. It’s been proven that it’s take longer to talk. Contact a speech therapy and get him checked out. I put my son in therapy when he was 18 months and 6 months later he was pretty much talking.

Same with my 20 month old girl. Her pediatrician referred us to speech, so now we have a speech eval next week. Try not to worry, but it’s definitely worth mentioning. Good luck mama!

My toddlers did not speak until 2.5 years old and they are now normal 3 and 4 year olds. Sometimes delayed isn’t much of anything. Talk to your ped and let them decide what’s next

Boys are lazy lol and typically a little bit more behind when it comes to talking! I wouldn’t be concerned as of right now keep encouraging him! I’d say if he passes the 24 month mark with no changes I’d recommend maybe speaking to a dr for their thoughts! My cousin only started speaking more words 2 and half years old dr said the same thing! Now he doesn’t stop talking lol!! ☺️ reading books to them help a lot!
