My son is almost 20 months and not really talking but understands everything we say and ask him to do. Advice?

I agree with the other comments saying to seek speech therapy help since there’s no harm in making sure everything’s on track and I’ve found they’re always helpful (I teach toddlers and refer parents to speech paths). In the mean time out can try asking more open ended questions so that your child has to respond with more than a yes or no answer. Also you can work on language at home by labeling everything. Point to your mouth with your fingers and slowly enunciate words so the child can watch how you make sounds and they can mimic. Also reading a book or two everyday always helps with language skills.

My son is about to be 3 on the 11th but around 20 months he was putting together small sentences. Now he’s putting together 5/7 word sentences and questions only because he has an older brother who he learned from.

have you tried speech therapy? when I worked in a daycare there was lots of kids who did and they started talking so much more within a few months

Around 15 months my son could put two words together into phrases like “more please” or “look mama.” Around 18 months he could sing twinkle twinkle little star, and by 2 he could talk back and forth in sentences with an adult pretty decently. If you have Instagram, there’s an account called Speech Sisters who have lots of tips and even a class to take for parents of toddlers. I would go ahead and get him evaluated by a speech language pathologist earlier rather than later if you think he could benefit. Even if he tests out and isn’t delayed, they will be able to give you tips, too!
