Type 2 diabetic and pregnant

Hello! I have been prescribed metformin for my f diabetes but now the diabetic endocrinologist is saying I need to switch to insulin 4 shots a day! I read that metformin is safe for both mom and baby and there are no known side effects but the doctor refuses to prescribe anything but insulin to all his pregnant patients. Is anyone else on metformin and pregnant?
