What does it mean to "turn the air up?"

My husband and I have had this ongoing argument for years lol. My logic is that turning the air up means making it hotter by turning the thermostat up. His logic is that it means making the room colder by increasing the amount of cold air circulating. I'm interested in hearing outsiders opinions!

In this context I read air to be air-conditioning, so if you turn the AC up you make the room colder.

Depends if the heat or AC is on. If the heat is on, it means make it hotter. If the AC is on, it means make it colder. If you don’t have central heat/AC, it means make the fan/heater blow faster air.

So "the air" is short for air conditioning. 
Air conditioning is cold becuase the opposite is the heat which is...well, heat.
So if you turn the air conditioning up, you are lowering the temperature.

Lol I had this same disagreement with my husband before. But I would say "turn the ac up", "he would say, you want it colder than this, it's already cold" I would say "no turn it up means it will be hotter since the temperature were setting it to will be higher". 
He still will say turn it up when he wants it colder and turn it down when he wants it hotter alot of times. But I learned to understand what he means and he understands what I mean too. Lol
