Any female police officers?

I’m thinking about becoming one. I’m 28 with 2 young kids ages 3 and 5.

I just got out. Don’t do it lol pay sucks, schedule sucks, work/life balance is wack, you miss so many holidays, parties, school events, etc. The public sucks & it’s so draining

One of my son’s friend’s mom is a sherif and I will say, the dad does most of the caregiving. He is the one that shows up to all the school functions and drops her off/picks her up. I rarely see mom. I’ve talked to her a few times and she told me it is hard, because she’s often at work for things like birthdays and Christmas. But if that’s your calling, then do it. Lord knows we need GOOD cops.

Im not one but I know a couple. Do you have a husband or other support to help with the kids? The reason I ask is they usually give the better schedules to those with seniority, so you may be stuck with nights and weekends and holidays early on. Which may not be a bad thing if you have a good set up at home anyway.

This was my career goal coming out of high school then college. I got on a department and the academy was awful. It was clear I was not wanted or respected. I had also been a dispatcher before the academy and the scheduling sucks. This was almost 12 years ago. I am so glad I have a m-f day job now. I have 2 under 3.

My father is a retired police officer and worked at the police department for 30 years. I wasn’t a police officer but I worked in corrections for 5 years. My husband works in corrections as well. I left after giving birth to my first born because of the hours and with my husband and I both working 12+ hours and having a newborn, it was too much. My husband was day shift and I was night shift and there’s been numerous times that we had to stay over at work because an incident occurred. I didn’t hate the job but my health and my daughter comes first. My husband stayed and luckily got promoted at the same time when I left. If you do join the law enforcement, there’s a lot of sacrifices. Missing your kids school performances, holidays, being called in for overtime, vacations, etc. That’s how the job is. My father who was a police officer missed quite a bit of wonderful events and special occasions.

I also looked into this. I have 2 boys the same ages. It’s expensive if you can’t find a police department to send you. If you can find a department to sponsor you, just know they “own” you for about 3 years. Meaning you have to work for them for that amount of time unless you can pay them back. It’s a long academy time. You’re only home on the weekends and some weekends you are required to stay. You’ll need some firearm knowledge but they will teach you some as well. I used to be a corrections officer at a sheriffs office so the deputies would tell me the process when I’d talk about wanting to go through it. Good luck mama.

I’m not but my husband is one. If you don’t have 24/7 around the clock care for your kids, I’d ask what their schedule is like ahead of time. My husband got moved around a lot while training with multiple last minute changes and has several more years of third shift.
