How to “handle the pain?” Anything to prep or do?

I never cleaned/douched I just tried to time to after a bowel movement 
It didnt go well one time and grossed me out so bad was the last time

You HAVE to completely relax for it not to hurt. 
You can try anal training where you start with a very small anal plug and work your way up. Ideally go a bit bigger than your partner because it'll make it easier to take them since they're smaller than what you trained up to. 
Silicone based lube is better than water based. It tends to stay wetter longer, and less likely to cause any damage. Apply lube generously to you and your partner. 
For me personally my husband is quite large, girth and length. I have him go in very, very, VERY slow, once all of it is in, he can go to pound town. For newer people especially if you're struggling to relax, go slow the whole time and gradually increase to your threshold. 
It's almost always messy in some way shape or form. I try to only do it if I've had a bowel movement that day to avoid it, but it still happens. If the guy isn't bothered, don't let it bother you. I don't do anything else to prep.

I used to do it along time ago and the only way I delt with the pain was being drunk. 🤣🤣

I just don't do it if I actively have to poop. As long as I don't have to poop it's always fine and never been any mess. 
We like the water based astroglide it's like $3. Do not get the silicone astroglide that's like $10 that one sucks! 
You have to go suuuupper slow and it doesn't hurt and then after you're used to it you can go faster. Like literally we will be in the spooning position and he'll insert just a tiny bit and then we just sit that way for a few minutes until I'm more relaxed and we keep repeating that until I'm all the way relaxed it can take over 10 minutes to even get started a little bit. 
Also using a vibrator on my clit helps soooooo much.

3) if you’re worried about a mess place a towel down 
4) A condom isn’t exactly 100% needed but I’d use one to avoid infections on his half, also DO NOT switch back and forth between holes!

Relax completely and use lots of lube. Let him rim and finger it first before going in and obviously he should be more gentle and not pound it, it's not a vagina and obviously before all of that make sure that there's nothing inside and also wash it thoroughly. And no it doesn't smell. Yes it takes some getting used to but it does feel good.  We do it rarely though.
