Ozempic, Type 2 Diabetes med, shortage/concerns

De

I’m struggling to come up with an actual question in regards to this, but maybe we can just discuss it? Ozempic is a drug for Type 2 Diabetes, used to help patients manage blood sugar. However in the past year (or longer?) there’s been a shortage of it, and diabetic patients were having a hard time filling prescriptions because of it. The shortage came about because of the drug’s ability to control appetite, so many people were using it to lose weight. Stopping the drug caused massive weight gain, so people just continued taking it.

Now I can see how people would blame non-diabetic people for taking the drug for weight loss, but it’s not like they can obtain the drug without a prescription from an actual doctor. So in my mind, the only people to actually blame for this drug’s shortage are the doctors prescribing it to people who have no medical need for it. I am finding some huge ethical concerns with this.

Thoughts? Opinions?
