Mattress topper or bed made for babies?

Hello all! I’m expecting soon, and as you know mattresses can be pricey. I’m paying for everything on my own since I don’t want my family involved in my child’s life. I have the money saved up for when the baby arrives, I’m just missing one last thing. Which is a Mattress, now I’ve been searching around for a crib and mattress and very rarely does the crib come with a mattress… cribs and mattress are already expensive enough plus I’m anxious it won’t be soft enough, maybe it won’t fit or baby won’t like it. What did you do in this situation? Did you DIY it or bought a mattress? Mattresses aren’t supposed to be soft. You do not need a mattress topper. They are not safe and will put your baby at risk for suffocating.

Second hand crib, new mattress. It doesn't need to be anything fancy but it does need to be a proper mattress, mine cost $90 from Amazon.

Honestly I just slept with my kids. But I was given a crib mattress before my 1st baby was born and I was given another one before my 2nd baby was born. If you look on marketplace there's tons on there depending on the area

Infant mattresses are supposed to be hard. Don’t DIY, chances are anything you would DIY wouldn’t be safe.

You’ll want to buy a crib mattress because they are safety tested to fit correctly inside cribs with no extra gaps and the correct firmness. You will not want to add a mattress topper because too soft or plush of a sleep surface poses risk of suffocation. The only things than can go on the mattress are waterproof covers and tight fitted sheets. Similarly, all cribs on the market are safety tested. The bars have to be a certain distance apart so the baby cannot get lodged in between.

A mattress is not something I would DIY. Try to find a used crib on marketplace & buy a new mattress or opt for a pack n play instead as you won’t need a mattress

Look for a secondhand crib, and just get a new mattress for it. Most cribs are a standard size so you shouldn’t have any trouble finding a mattress for it. You don’t want one that is too soft, it should be quite firm actually, that’s much safer for babies.

I bought one and baby wouldn't sleep in it. We have been co-sleeping since birth lol Have you got an ikea where you live? I would go somewhere like there, that has them on display for you to see/feel the quality.
