IUI & ABSTINCE FROM SEX

Hi Ladies. We are planning on having IUI on 17th March. Currently on clomid waiting for HCG shot on the 15th. Hubby has low sperm count & I have regular but heavy periods. My doctor advised us to abstain for 12 days straight. Is this normal. How long were you advised to wait?
