Is it safe to swim in a cold spring?

Google isn't very straightforward. Im hoping for some actual answers on here. I just want to know if its safe to swim.

I asked my doc the cold water/lake swimming and he said if you do it already then just do it, it’s more concerning to raise internal temp so avoid hot tubs and such
