Gestational diabetes

Yasmin

I’m having trouble controlling my gestational diabetes. I’m currently 33 weeks pregnant and I found out at around 30 weeks that I had GD. At first we tried to control my numbers with just diet alone but it wasn’t working so they had me on 12 units of long acting insulin at night and 10 units of short acting for breakfast and dinner. My numbers for fasting were still high like 130-140 in the morning even though I took the insulin and they increased my long acting to 15 units and the numbers are a little better but not where they should be. Now they are around 110-120 in the morning. For breakfast and dinner regardless of me taking the insulin my numbers have been crazy high this past week like in the 200 range. This seems extremely high and I’m scared how this is affecting my baby. What did you do to keep your numbers within range. At first I was eating virtually no carbs but then after meeting with the nutritionist she told me I had to eat carbs and my numbers got worse after that.

Before bed make sure you are having a good snack but no more than 15 mins before bed. I had good luck with an apple with cinnamon on it and cheese or an apple with cinnamon and peanut butter. Cinnamon helps lower blood sugar naturally. So I put it on everything I ate. It took me a little bit to figure out what carbs I was ok to eat and which ones made my numbers go up. As others have said make sure you are eating protein with carbs.

Eat protein with your carbs! I have GD and this has been helping me.

U need good carbs and portion controlled. For ex. U can have one alice or half a slice of multigrain bread. Or u can have a few bites of potatoes. Or a small side of beans. But not bread and potatoes and beans. Not big portions either.

Carbs will make the numbers worse. You have to limit them and when you do eat carbs, you need something to help you level it.Lots of fibers help. So for dinner we would mix lentils or beans in to help. And I would actually avoid carbs most of the day apart from dinner 😅 And when I say lots of fiber, I mean LOTS of fiber. Best wishes to you and hope all is well with you over the coming weeks 🙏
