Is it possible to extend my maternity leave beyond the standard duration?

Hey amazing moms! I was wondering if any of you have successfully extended your maternity leave beyond the standard duration. If so, how did you go about it? Let's share our experiences and knowledge!

Some states offer additional parental leave time. My company offers 3-4 months paid depending on type of delivery, etc., but in DC they will pay you a partial salary for another 2ish months and extend your FMLA time so that your employer can’t fire you. I’m gonna try to shoot for 6 months, since we can swing it financially…even if it annoys my boss.

My job offers up to 12 weeks of unpaid maternity leave. We are STRESSED about saving for the time off because at this rate, even 6 weeks is going to destroy our finances. I am going to talk to my job about going back for half days for a few weeks after my return to ease back into it and still be able to spend crucial time with our little love.

My job offers 6 weeks unpaid. I extended it to 12 weeks with fmla.
