Am I doing enough to eradicate the Parvo?

I had a puppy die from Parvo today. He was a vet-held stray that I brought home on Friday night. Saturday night he started displaying some symptoms of parvo, Sunday morning he didn't eat. I took him back to the vet who decided to treat him as an outpatient as their clinic was full of parvo puppies and they were hoping it was a false positive (as he just got vaccinated).

By Sunday evening he was steadily declining, I did try contact the vet but they only got back to me after 10pm and by that time, the little boy was sleeping. However, about an hour and a half later he started acting really weirdly so we rushed him to an afterhours emergency vet. He was given meds and fluids, and I let the regular vet know (she did reply to me in the early mornings, but was just asking what the emergency vet did).

The poor boy was a bit restless in the night, but by 06:30 he was completely lethargic. I rushed him to the regular vet (luckily someone was there early, they only open at 8am). His glucose was really low and his temp was high.

The vet phoned me just after 8am to say he had passed.

I am of course, gutted. This came just after I lost another dog on Saturday after a long battle with cancer.

But I have other dogs, two are senior, and I'm worried about Parvo lingering in the house.

I have been disinfecting the house as much as possible since Sunday. Spraying the carpets, couches, cushions, the dogs paws everytime they came back from outside, with the vet recommended disinfectant. Mopped the kitchen and bedroom (non-carpeted) with the disinfectant. Washed all the dog bedding, and our bedding, with it. Sprayed their beds (the cushions and plastic parts) with it.

Today I got 3l of bleach and have been spraying the garden. I did all the brickwork around the house, and sprayed the entire front yard with the bleach mixture (it took me over an hour just to do the front garden). I sprayed the couches, cushions and carpets again. Washed their bedding again, and stuck them in the dryer for good measure. Sprayed the bedroom and kitchen floors. Washed any clothing we wore over the weekend with the disinfectant. Sprayed the bottom of our shoes.

I still have to do the grass in the backyard, and once we get some rain (which might only be in a few weeks at this rate), I want to spray all the grass again. I feel if the ground is wet, adding the bleach mixture might penetrate more, but I did go over really dry and sandy spots more than once with the bleach mixture today.

I also sprayed my car in it's entirety, including my keys and the door handles. Same for the house keys and door handles.

Is there anything else I need to be doing?

If your other dogs are fully vaccinated against it, there’s not much outside of that you can do to prevent it. It can live in the ground for up to 7years no matter what you try. It’s transferred through feces. My personal opinion as someone who’s pup also had parvo and beat it, is to not check them into the vet. Treating them with fluids yourself as an outpatient is the best option. My mother was a vet technician for 10yrs and she put it to me this way “if you leave pup here, they will hook her up to fluids but no one will be watching 24/7, she could get tangled in the line or chew through it and no one will know until they come back in the morning. If you buy the treatment and take pup home, you can dose her every 15mins as necessary until she gets better” which is what we did, it was a long 3 days of forcing fluids down her throat every 15-30 mins until she could keep it down without vomiting. I would wish this on no one, it is sad and rough. But we did it and my pup survived.

So sorry thats so tough. Unfortunately its highly contagious between dogs. They will catch it from contact with the infected dog or an object they have touched or their poop. Puppies are most likely to get it cause they are still getting their shots and arent as strong where as adult dogs usually dont ( they definitely still can) id talk to your vet to ask what you should do. But id disinfect everywhere and everything where your pup was.
