Am I mean for wanting my 14yo to get a job

My son is 14 and I found out the McDonald’s in my town is hiring 14 and up. I got an application for him and he’s got an attitude talking all about how it’s illegal (it’s not) and how he’s got school to focus on but he has good grades and doesn’t even have to try whereas I did when I was his age. I think he’s old enough to start putting money towards things for himself. I wouldn’t take the money for myself. I’m thinking about signing him up anyway for punishment with how he’s been talking to me over this.
