Best Materiel for Paint

I need some guidance from all of you artistically inclined people. I saw this idea on social media to take a plain Christmas tree skirt, dip your child’s hand in paint, and put it on the border of the skirt. Doing this annually creates a beautiful display of the growth of your child each Christmas season. I want to do this with my 1.5 year old, but I’m not sure what type of material would hold the paint best over time. Would a nylon material work well? Canvas? Help!
