The best way to know that baby is getting enough is by looking at wet diapers. 6+ wet diapers per day means they are getting enough. When bottle feeding, baby needs about 1-1.25oz per hour (so if it’s been 2h since their last feed, 2-2.5oz is all they’d need.) Look up “pace fed bottles” for info on a bottle feeding method that more closely mimics breastfeeding. It helps avoid over feeding and bottle preference. Whenever baby gets a bottle, you should pump around the same time to maintain your supply. If you are pumping between nursing sessions and not missing feeds (eg 10:00 feed, then pump, then feed again at 12:00 without giving any bottles) it’s normal to get 0.5-1oz total. Anything more than that is oversupply. If you want to build a stash, it’s best to start with something low suction like a Haakaa to collect letdown while you’re feeding on the opposite side. That way you can collect enough for a few bottles over the course of a few days, but won’t encourage overproduction. Don’t forget that whatever you feed baby in a bottle you’ll be replacing by pumping while you’re apart anyway.

What are you pumping for? Is it on top of nursing? Is it for a feed? Are you exclusively pumping?

You have over supply. Stop pumping on top of nursing, it’s not advised by IBCLCs before 6wks pp. if you want a little stash just use a haaka. Also any time baby gets a bottle you have to pump that missed nursing session. But really what you’re getting after nursing is over supply.

I was pumping just to try and have extra milk in the freezer on top of nursing and also so my husband can bottle feed my daughter to just to help sometimes.

That’s enough to build something. It will take a while to build up a stash. I built mine soon as we came home. I’m thankful I did. I was gone a week with my daughter who was hospitalized 3 hours from home. I would feed and then use the haakaa to collect more. It was usually around an ounce or so. Maybe a little more. Now at 11 weeks I can get 2-5oz, that’s on top of feeding him. I don’t collect at every feeding either. I was like you, I wanted to have a little something going so dad and siblings could feed him.
