Maybe a dumb question ? Someone help

This may be a super dumb question so sorry if it is, I’m only 22 and don’t know anything about taxes really and don’t have parents to ask lol I’ve filed my taxes the last 3 years in a row but had twins early last year and became a stay at home mom so I didn’t work. I tried to file because I didn’t know if you have to file every year or what and it said my twins qualified as my dependents but I would not be getting a federal refund this year obviously because I didn’t work so I didn’t file. My boyfriend however did work throughout the year on and off with his father who owns his own business, but apparently was paid under the table (I never knew that) but does that mean he can’t file taxes either ? Can neither of us file? We both supported our kids all year so not really sure if we need to file or what. Again so sorry if this sounds dumb 😅 I’m not very smart when it comes to stuff like this
