Hey I’m 16 years old, and I want to get on birth control. I’m just scared to ask my parents because I don’t want them to be mad/disappointed. I wouldn’t be disappointed in my child for wanting birth control. But if you’re not sexually active, there’s no reason at this point. Unless you think sex is coming in the next month or so, but you said years.

If you aren’t on birth control, do not have sex. Simple. If you want to have sex, Make sure you have a boyfriend who cares about you, and if you are definitely going to be sexually active, please talk to your parents. They should be aware of it since you are still a child under their care, and they should be able to help you with birth control so you can practice safe sex. At the very least, have a condom on you and do NOT take no for an answer; your partner MUST wear one. Anyone you are having sex with should be mature enough to wear protection. Not only from pregnancy, but from STDs/STIs. Also please know that birth control can fail. If you want to be SURE you won’t get pregnant, take your BC and have your partner wear the condom from the first moment of penetration until you two are finished! Even pre-cum can contain sperm and get you pregnant. Be safe.

I started BC at 16 and it was due to my acne and that just happened to be a plus even though my parents didn’t know I was active at the time. It did have some side effects but nothing too bad and it also took a while to find one that was best for my body.
