Do you butter your bread before or after you toast it?

My husband made me some buttered toast and when I asked him if there was butter on it, it led to the discovery that he puts the butter on before, whereas I put it on after. I think it's strange that he does it before because you can't really taste it and he thinks it's strange that I do it after because it doesn't have a chance to soak into the bread. Obviously there is no correct way to do it, but I'm curious what other people are doing. If you don't butter your bread, that's also cool, I'm just curious about this whole butter thing!
