Question

If you found out your baby had Down syndrome or any other deformities would you abort even though you’ve been trying for a long time?

Answer

I wouldn't. I had an Uncle with Down Syndrome. He was a twin. His twin didn't have it. He wasn't expected to live past the age of 7. He lived to be in his 70s. He even won gold at the Special Olympics. He lived a very full and happy life. I've always denied the testing. I figured the chance is always there. No different than helping any of my children navigate a world that's not necessary for them. They could have any number of things that can't be detected through testing. Anxiety. Major depression. Autism. Still my job to help them navigate the world to the best of our abilities. 
The only way I'd abort is if the child would have little chance of surviving birth/shortly after birth, or if they'd have zero quality of life. That's no life at all. 
All of that said, I am not any better than anyone who would abort for any reason and I will always advocate for safe and accessible abortions for all women. It's a highly personal choice and it's a difficult one to make. For anyone who has faced this choice or who may be facing it now, or will face it in the future...I send you all of my love and I hope you make the choice that's best for you regardless of what anyone else would or wouldn't do.
