Is this hair for “black girls only”?

I’m Mexican and Puerto Rican. I wanted to get my hair done like this. I think it’s called jumbo twists or something along those lines.. well my bf said not to cause he think I’m “trying to be black”. But lots of girls where I’mfrom wear their hair similar to this?? I’ve never been told that before and I don’t want to do it and people look at me inappropriately like I shouldn’t have my hair that way.
