In case of legitimate anaphylactic reactions you go with Benadryl (diphenhydramine). It shouldn’t be given for things like seasonal allergies or minor reactions.

I have some pretty severe food allergies (I have very few things I’m allergic to, but I go into full anaphylactic shock if I do) so our pediatrician gave us the dosage for Benadryl and told us to feel free to come to the office the first time we give a common allergy food (peanut butter, tree nuts, eggs, etc). Benadryl is ok for infants as long as it is given under physicians guidance. 
My daughter has pretty severe environmental allergies so she’s been on Zyrtec for most of her 4 years of life. The doctor gave us the initial dosage and we’ve just upped per the directions as time went on.

Benadryl is not recommended at all for kids under 6yrs old. If dr says use that, they have to give you the dosage. 
Zyrtec is approved for 6m and older.
