GD late diagnosis?
I would like to share my story. Please let me know if you have experience something like this, late diagnosis of GD and what was the outcome. I had my screening test done at 26 week and went normal (upper limit though), then at 28 weeks started with frequent urination, thirsty and hungry all the time, at 29 started having contractions every 4-5min, so I went to ER and they told me that I had glucose in my urine and ketone, I went to my FU appointment with my OBY who seemed not caring about it, and suggested that my glucose was because I was not gaining weight for the last 4 weeks and my body was eating itself. She told me to eat more so I did, but symptoms did not go away. As a foreing medical doctor, I knew something was going on, and told to my OBY my concerns but she didn't pay attention and said to no stress about it, seeing the lack of interest from my doctor, I decided to check my blood and urine glucose (glucose 3+) on my own and started diet low carbs/sugars, and my levels were up, Last week at 31 weeks I told her again that I was having high fasting glucose more than 120, and that morning the medical assistant confirmed that I had 3+glucose only after I explained her that I was checking my glucose and before going to the clinic I had taken 1 test and was 3+, OBY wrote in the chart it was the first time that i had glucose in my urine, and if at the next visit I had glucose she will repeat the GTT, last week I contacted my OBY and reminded her that I am a foreign doctor knowing the risk of an undiagnosed GD, decided to self check my urine and blood sugars and requested to repeat GGT which she accepted. On friday,, I had my GGT 3hrs done and I have failed fasting and 2 hr test which confirm that I have GD based on ACOG and ADA criteria, I have my doctor's appointment at the end of the week and will see what she says, i just hope she now cares about me and my baby. I am feeling very frustrated with the health system and doctors who doesn't care for their patients concern and even more when I am a healthcare professional as well!!! What I learned is everyone needs to advocate for themselves because no ones will for you, if you feel something it is not right, speak up. Trust your gut and look for 2nd opinion if needed. I understand that for someone without a medical background this might be a challange and might never know about their diagnosis due to lack of knowledge and bad medical professionals. I pray to God my baby is health!
