Has anyone been told they were a carrier for the SMA (spinal muscular atrophy) gene? Second pregnancy but first time hearing this. 1st born, no sma. Looking for insight.

Approximately 1 in 50 people are carriers for SMA, so it’s relatively common. Everyone is a carrier for multiple genetic syndromes and most of us do not even know all of them. Carrier status for SMA can only be detected via carrier screening, which is not done in every pregnancy and could explain why you didn’t know about it before. Ultimately, it only matters if your partner is also a carrier of SMA. If he is a carrier, then it is a 1/4 chance that your baby would have SMA.

I was told im the carrier od the SMA1 i have 3 previous kids and this is the first time i was told this my husband had to get tested all 3 are 100% healthy and do not have it

I was told something similar that I was a carrier for spine bifida I lost my daughter at 21 weeks but she did not have that . It’s just a gene that I was high risk because of MTHFR mutation . Not sure that helps you
