Question

Paraguard (copper iud) users, please go off about your experiences, good and bad! I’m currently contemplating switching from a hormonal IUD (kyleena) to the copper. Thank you!

I love mine! I had the Paraguard from age 18-23, then became pregnant the first time we tried. After my son was born, I had the Paraguard placed back in and I’ve had it for 8 years. I’ve had zero issues! It’s amazing! I will only use this form of birth control. I don’t have to worry about using condoms either.

I had the copper IUD for 7 years before having it removed to start TTC my son. I absolutely loved it. It made my first few period cycles extremely painful, but it’s like my body adjusted after a few months and they went back to feeling the same as they did pre-IUD. I can’t recommend it enough.

I’ve only had it for 4 months. I’ve tried every hormonal birth control on the market and played around with different brands.
Hormonal birth control gives me severe depression, very low sex drive and all kinds of issues. I was done with it all to top it off I got pregnant on the pill.
After I had my baby, I got the copper IUD placed. I prayed that this one would work well with me because I was 100% done with hormones. It’s been amazing so far, I do not have any depression or low sex drive. I feel like me. The first period was pretty bad with the cramps it was like I could kinda feel the iud cramping. Hard to explain lol but after that one my cramps are only like a 5/10 for the first day and the rest I’m fine. The flow is heavier, given before I had my baby the implant caused me to have pretty light periods after I got off it.

The insertion is the most painful part. I spot for a few days before my period comes, I had mine since February and my cycle is starting to get back normal. Meaning less spotting and the cramps aren’t that bad.

Had mine for about 6 months before getting it removed, insertion wasn’t that bad with 2 ibuprofen but the cramps afterwards and my periods made it unbearable, I would have the worst cramps to where I was throwing up and couldn’t walk, had to call out of work every month. I also had extreme lower abdominal pain for 2 weeks straight after insertion that would come and go randomly throughout the 6 months. It was so painful if anything pressed on my stomach I would scream. Besides the occasional stomach pain and my periods I sometimes forgot it was even there, if you’re sensitive to metals (ear piercings for example) maybe talk to your doctor about that.
