Neglect or just mildly bad parenting?
So my family member has an almost 3 year old boy and an almost 2 year old girl. They’ve had CPS called on them a few months ago by hospital staff when their son was in the hospital with the flu. I didn’t get the full details but from what the kids grandma told me, it’s because he was dehydrated and malnourished.
The case was closed.
I hadn’t seen them in a while, so I was surprised when I saw the boy and his entire top teeth were rotten to the gum. Like his teeth are literally gone. I asked the grandma if they had made a doctor or dentist appointment and she said they keep canceling it and “he’s fine” because “baby teeth can’t hurt or get infected because there’s no root”…a simple google will tell you otherwise. I understand sometimes you can do everything right and cavities can happen but all his teeth ROTTEN? They are nubs at the gum and the bit that is still there are black. I asked another family member how it got so bad and they said he still gets bottles, with sweet tea and Hawaiian Punch juice in it. Like what???? Makes you wonder if he was. Malnourished because his mouth hurts too bad to eat, so he just gets his calories from the bottle. I feel like this little boy has got to be in so much pain. I feel so bad for when he starts school because kids are fucking mean and he won’t have any teeth…there’s nothing there to even cap. He won’t have any top teeth til he’s like 6 or 7….
I think they’re putting off taking him to the dentist because they know they fucked up and they’re going to get another case on them. In my opinion, they should be scared. Everyone else in my family says it’s not a big deal, and not neglect. But when it’s effecting your child’s health, this is 100% neglect in my opinion. It is the bare minimum to just brush your kids teeth’s
