Calorie intake and calorie deficit

If I eat 1500 calories a day does, that mean I have to burn 1500+ calories a day to lose weight?

I seen online it says a good rule of thumb is to be in a 500 calorie deficient. Does that mean I have to eat 500 calories less so 1000 calories or do I have to lose 500 calories when I work out? Can someone please explain all this to me.
