Seeing your baby hospitalized is heartbreaking

Allison

My sweet T-Rex had to be admitted to the picu this morning. He’s been sick for 11 days now. It started as a dry random cough. Then it became a yucky wet cough. We took him to the pediatrician after 2 days of the wet cough. He was given antibiotics for a mild ear infection and an inhaler. 5 days of those and no improvement at all so we messaged his pediatrician again. She saw him first thing this morning on Sunday (she’s amazing).

We tried a steroid shot and a nebulizer first. His pulse ox was low and didn’t improve so she walked him right over to the hospital and had him admitted.

So far he’s negative for Covid, flu, rsv, pneumonia, and bronchitis (and whatever else was ran in the standard virus panel). He’s been on oxygen all day and his pulse ox is still low. He has to stay until his oxygen is stable enough without help.

His only symptoms are labored breathing and a raspy wet cough. No fever. Eating and drinking fine. He wants to walk, jump, and play. He is hating being confined to a small space.

I’m hoping it’s nothing serious. He was born at 27 weeks. Complications aren’t too shocking. He has weak lungs (he was on oxygen for the first 5 months of his life). He had many bugs over the last year (gymnastics and library time came with exposure) and he was always the least affected! Whatever this virus is was too much for him.

My mommy heart hurts to see this.

I’m so thankful my husband has stayed with him this whole time. He’s the best partner and dad.

I hope for some answers and improvement tomorrow.

It was nap time so he slept through the nebulizer
