Baby should soak in vernix?

So I’ve heard lots of things like “don’t let nurses wash your baby after birth” I’ve read on the benefits but if it’s a lot of vernix on the baby, are you supposed to just let them soak in it and not wipe anything off? Also are you supposed to clothe them with all of the vernix on? Can you wipe some off? lol! What did you all do?

Both my children I refused the bath in the hospital and didn’t bath them at home until about a week. 
They just wipe down baby with blanket (my second was born covered in it). They put a nappy and a sleep suit, hat and swaddle. Neither were ever smelly.
It’s a preference really.

The hospital doesn’t bathe the baby until at LEAST 24hr post birth. They leave a good layer on, but usually wipe off the thick white that is smelly and slippery. Usually just a diaper and blanket to swaddle them the first 24hr at least that’s how it’s been with my 3.

I was honestly thankful for the bath in the hospital. I had an emergency c section and the nurses offered to do it for me. It gave me a little bit of time to relax and use the bathroom post operation while they handled everything for me.

It’s a preference. Leaving the vernix has benefits but it’s not super serious.

Mine was cleaned off. They both survived and turned out ok.
