When to transition to booster seat for car?

I have a tall 4.5 year old.
She is at least 45 inches tall, and 50 pounds.
Wondering when people usually transfer to booster seats.

She should still be in a forward facing 5 point harness convertible carseat at 4.5 and 50lbs. Not ready for a booster for quite a while because her body is too small to be protected by a seatbelt and booster seat alone. Lots of kids are even still rear facing at that age if under 50lbs and under 49in tall. Most convertible seats are made to keep a child in the 5 point harness for much longer because thats the safest option. I waited until my daughter was 6 this year. She was 44 inches tall and around 44 pounds. When they reach the height and weight limits of the car seat and are within the height and weight limits of the high back booster seat that you want to use, then you can switch them.

I do a high back booster with my 7 year old. We switched when he was 5. He’s currently 50 inches and 48lbs so similar in size.

We transitioned at 5. My daughter is 45inches and 55lbs. Shes also at an age where she is really wanting to gain as much independence as possible so she is able to get in and out of her seat on her own. She was struggling with the harness and wanting to buckle and unbuckle herself but couldn’t. The transition has been a breeze.
