Is a baby monitor necessary?

Question

I plan on sleeping next to my baby (baby in bedside bassinet.) my question is, why should I get a baby monitor? First time mom so sorry if this sounds dumb! My house is small so I know id be able to hear baby cry from kitchen or anywhere in my house really (one bedroom house)

I’d get a $20 cheap one if nothing else. That way if you’re in the shower, on your patio, the washing machine is running, etc you can still hear

We used ours just to check when we were downstairs on an evening - easier to check if he was actually awake rather than opening the door. We also ended up moving our son into his own room at 4 months rather than 6 months because he was waking us up grunting and we were waking him up turning over etc so it was good to have ready. I can definitely hear him all over the house so we have the sound off x

Its good to have one especially if you step outside to get the mail or take out trash. My house isn't huge but we used it to keep tabs when doing those things or letting the dog out to play.

Get a cheap one. You don’t need cameras and all that. But in my experience babies aren’t very loud (I have 4). You don’t want to wait to the point where they’re screaming their lungs out because you can’t hear them when they’re stirring and cooing. Sometimes all they need is a pacifier and they’re not even awake. Also, you’re not going to go to bed before 8pm every night are you? Because that’s when my kids go down.

They are necessary the first year in my opinion. If you are ever awake and baby is not and you need or want to leave the room the monitor will let you know if baby has woken up or moved a lot so that you can get back to baby. For me it saved me from a nightmare one time. I left him in the middle of my king side bed as a 2 months old and heard him shifting on the monitor so I run back in and he was on the edge of the bed. I didn’t know he could move that much at the time otherwise I would’ve put him in his crib but I only went to get a snack. Anyway for me personally it’s a necessity

I didn’t think I’d want one when I had my first kid. I only used the sound one at first with no video monitor. Ended up getting and using a video monitor and I still use it with my kids who are 1, 3 & 5 years old. If I hear crying in the middle of the night, I don’t have to play guessing game of who’s crying while I’m half asleep. I can check the monitor and tend to whoever it is.

I never had a baby monitor. I live in a tiny(one bedroom) house so it's always been easy to hear baby if they're crying.

You don’t really need one, but it is nice to have. There are more pros than cons in my opinion.
