Do you consider a wedding a religious ceremony?

Asking about the “traditional American wedding” type ceremony only.

I chose to keep religion out of my ceremony. I’ve been to plenty of weddings that were in churches and religious.

I only consider it religious if there is certain wording that makes it religious, or obviously, if it's in a church. If I go to a wedding at a church, I assume it's a religious ceremony. ￼I have been to plenty of weddings that do not have any religious affiliation, where there's no wording associating God or anything spiritual. I have been to weddings where it is a legal ceremony made to reflect the personalities of the people being married. ￼

I completely depends on the person getting married. There’s literally thousands of different types and ways to get married or have a binding ceremony and they’re not all Christian based or even remotely religious. Some people don’t even get married! I didn’t have a marriage, but I have a husband. We had a handfasting.

It’s entirely up to the couple. America is massive with many cultures and subcultures as well as religions. We got married in the Catholic Church and since then I’ve left and am atheist. If we would have gotten married in this time of our lives, there’d be no religion at all involved. I’ve been to weddings that were very religious based and weddings no religion is even mentioned.

Weddings here have a religious background but there is nothing stating that it has to be religious.
