Asking for hand in marriage?

Do you think a guy should ask for a woman's hand in marriage? My father has passed and my SO was talking about asking my mother or older brother.. What are all of your thoughts? What did your husbands do?

My dad had been out of the picture for some time before my husband proposed. Since he knew that my mom and I were super close, he asked her permission the day he proposed. My hubby is very shy, and he showed my mom the ring and asked, "Is it okay if I ask?" She hugged him and said, "Oh hunny, I would smack you if you didn't."

My husband asked my dad for my hand. Not because my dad owned me or is a dictator, but because it's respectful! My dad felt very honored because of it, and that's special

I think it's a sweet sentiment. I'm sure it would make them feel good & included, but of course it's ultimately your relationship, business, and decision. My step dad appreciated my husband calling & asking him beforehand.

My husband didn't seek my parents permission / blessing etc. they have no say who I choose to be with and it is my choice and it should not be influenced by anyone. 
Just my opinion though.

I guess it's a nice sentiment but I find it kind of cliche and cheesy at this point. I'm the only one who needs to give permission or consent to get married. Plus I don't have a relationship with my dad.

My husband asked my Muncles permission(my uncle=Muncle). He took my sister and I in when we were 15 and my dad passed when we were 14(twins) so he asked our father figure. ❤️❤️

That implies that she belongs to her father or male family members instead of herself in my opinion
