Too cheap or just right?

Question

My daughter’s group is doing a “summer fest” on a weekday. It is required that adults pay $9 and kids 5$. They will have noodles with/without sauce and under donation the drinks. Besides the dishes/cutlery you have to bring with you and is wanted if parents bring in anything extra, salads, cakes, desserts etc. 
We are not going, but my husband said we are taking away our LOs fun and experience because we are being cheap. 
But I find this is exactly why our daycare is making things so expensive because parents feel obligated to do for the sake of their kids. That would mean that we‘ll be spending about 30-35 and my husband needs to come home early from work to attend, that’s another wasted money. Just to spend a couple of hours outside the kindergarten eating noodles. When my kid just a few ours prior was there with all her friends. What do you guys think?

If my kid(s) wanted to go, we'd go. I'm all about doing things my kids enjoy and remember.

Maybe a bit expensive, but not unreasonable imo.
And if you see your husband taking time of work to do things as a family and socializing I guess it's a waste, but the idea is you meet up with people, the kids play and the adults talk and socialize a bit I assume. 
I know some find it a waste of their time, but to me it sounds like a lovely way to get more involved with people around me and my kids. I would personally love it.

Unpopular opinion, I wouldn't go, I'd take that opportunity and spend the time & money on making memories doing something else, something more fun

Sounds like a good experience. Definitely worth the money for the memories. 
If you don’t have the money, that’s one thing. But to not go because you just don’t like the pricing is a bit silly in this situation. 
I’d pick up some little Caesar’s crazy bread and watch my child enjoy herself. 
If your husband missing work is such a big deal, he doesn’t have to go. You being there is wonderful. Both parents would be a treat.

I agree with others.. if you have the means, then do it. They’re trying to make it fun and include the family. Who cares if she was just there, it’s fun to see friends outside of school hours. My daughters school is a private school connected to a church, and as a result we get invited to church events. We try to go whenever possible because it creates memories for her, and us. It also helps us support the church & school. Plus we get to meet her friends outside of drop off/pick up. We were able to do a couple things this past school year and she still talks about how much fun it was. She also remembers different things during the school day we showed up for, and talks about those too. It’s important to kids to show up and create memories.

I agree with your husband. So what if your kid was already there? Its events like this that make memories with you and your children, or even your children and their friends. It would make your child/children happy to be able to do this and to have Mommy and/or Daddy there. With them. 30-35$? Thats not that expensive at all. As for how much daycares charge for things like this, you should take into account what they are using that money for. Theres not only the teachers that need to be paid (because they are NOT going to be paid for staying after hours for things like this!) Theres also all of the supplies that they and the kids use on the daily, the food that they buy out of their own pockets to feed your chileren, the utilities, etc. They dont just pocket the money, they put it toward their business to take care of the children. So yes, 35$ to make my child happy and make memories with them is totally worth it IMO!

It's not the money, if it can be afforded I'd do it. It's the memories made and time spent with family and friends. Sure it seems goofy a little to eat noodles outside the school, but it's a fun easy little event that makes memories. I try to stick to a very strict grocery budget, I don't have to be as strict as I am. But I save some aside for birthdays, holidays, family movie nights weekly (with themed dinners), occasionally we let our kiddos roam the store and grab whatever they want and have a picnic lunch just in our front yard under the big tree. It's something so small and they absolutely love it. Same with the themed family movie nights. My 5 yr old calls them "picnic dinners" but really it's just I make everything and put it all on cookie sheets to sit in the living room and watch a movie. Something that's different from our usual. She gets to help make the things and she's always excited to see what movie it's going to be. Shoot just yesterday morning they had The 3 Musketeers on Disney Jr. We got up a bit earlier and made rainbow colored Mickey pancakes. Best day ever she had a Mickey brekky. It doesn't take much for kids. Do the little things. You'll never regret it.

I mean you’re gonna lose out on maybe like $80 total with him missing work…..so yeah that seems pretty cheap to me, but if you really can’t afford that then so be it. It’s about making memories with your kids, not that you have to be inconvenienced to sit there for a couple hours
