Is this an acceptable first ever gift from a boyfriend?

On my birthday from boyfruend of 4 months who has never ever bought me a gift before, I opened the present and it was a dildo vibrating thing. I was absolutely shocked as he hasn’t discussed it with me first and there was no card or other present. He said he got the same for previous exes and they liked it. I felt really weird and sad after opening it, it seems a bit perverted and that no thought went into it, especially as I’m not a very sexual person and I have strong boundaries about sex.

When I got back home, my family were excitedLy asking me what he bought me for my birthday and to come down and show them, so I lied and said he got me some chocolate and that I’d already eaten it all. I’m a bad liar, and then they weren’t convinced so I had to say he didn’t get me anything and now my family and friends are disgusted by him

He could have bought me a cake and got me some flowers or chocolate and I would have been perfectly happy
