Looking for some advice from a dog trainer
I’ve posted before about my dog. She’s an almost 3 year old german Shepard , lab. Boxer mix and She has polymyopathy . As she gets older I can tell it’s gotten worse and her meds don’t work anymore . I’ve noticed when she’s having a bad day she is more prone to react and be annoyed with my kids. I have a 2 year old and a 10 month old. She’s a very sweet dog and just wants to be part of the family and is usually always hanging out with us. When she’s having a bad day with her condition I notice she will stay in a different room . She’s a very anxious dog as well and I think part of that is from her condition and then I think it’s from lack of her socializing . She used to be around more dogs and people when she was younger but Hasn’t for a while and yes I know that’s my fault . The other day my husband took her out to pee and one of the neighbor kids asked if he could pet her. My husband said yes but to go slow with her. She was wagging her tail which I know isn’t always a sign of happiness . The kid put his hand out to let her sniff it and she did but then she out of nowhere nipped him pretty good. She didn’t growl or make any sort of warning . My husband said he didn’t even know the kid got hurt till he saw the kid cry a little . The kid is okay I spoke to his mom and him. He kept telling me he was okay . I don’t want this type of thing to happen again for my dogs sake and for anyone else . She’s never done this before but I want to re-socialize her because I don’t want her to feel the way she’s been feeling . I want her to be good with kids and other dogs . Is there any advice on how to do this. I don’t know if I can afford a trainer but I’m looking into it and into other ways to ease her discomfort with her condition . I know she’s a misunderstood dog because she comes off as mean but she isn’t . She has a pretty deep bark for her size and that throws people off I think and then when she tries to go at people while on the leash it makes them afraid of her. I don’t blame them . Sometimes the hair on her back will stand up when certain people or dogs come by and sometimes she wants to go over to other dogs but I can’t tell if it’s to play or if she’s afraid .
