Would I be wrong to ask for more money?
Last school year, I was working as a Substitute Teacher for a elementary school. Even though I was a Sub, I reported to the same school every day. I was technically called a Permanent Sub. I subbed for the 4 preschool classrooms at that school. I have an interview next week for a full-time Teaching Assistant position for the same preschool program. One of the Assistants told me that she was making 15/hr. She said she was surprised because she doesn’t have a degree, but she did work in a daycare for 10 years before accepting that position. When I applied for the job, It stated on the website that the pay range for a Preschool Assistant is between 15-26/hr. Something tells me that they’re not going to offer me anything above 20. However, I have an Associates and a Bachelor’s degree in the Childcare field. I also have previous experience as a Teacher’s Assistant for another school district and I’ve worked in daycare. I worked as an Assistant for years before becoming a SAHM for a couple years. I feel like I should be able to get at least 17/hr because I have two degrees and experience. I was told by the other Aids that Human Resources will try to “low ball” the Assistants as much as possible. I’m not aware of what the other Assistants are making.
If I’m offered only the 15/hr, would I be wrong to ask for just a couple more dollars an hour?? I don’t want to sound like I’m being ungrateful. And I don’t want to ruin my chances at getting the job, but let’s be honest, 15/hr isn’t 💩.
I really want the job. It will be perfect for my daughter’s schedule. I can even bring her with me to the school I’m working at.
