The system is fucked
I need to vent. I am so irritated right now. I work in a shelter that is for teens in foster care from 13-17. We are actually going up to 19 years old in January. It's a shelter for when DHS can't find them a home right away. We have different buses from different high schools and middle schools coke pick the kids up. We just found out that the department of education is cutting the bus routes that comes to our shelter for all the schools. The reasoning is because it's not a great area and parents have complained about the bus route taking a bit longer to go all the way out here and they don't want a bus taking their kids through a dangerous area. There wasn't anything that happened like the kids seeing a shooting or some like that. No just parents didn't like it. This takes place next year and we are like 'What do you want us to do." And they said "Well they can walk to the bus stops." Which would be 15 minute walk for some, 30 for others. We can't do that. We are not allowed to let these kids walk by themselves. Some of them have a history of running away. Some have dangerous parents trying to find them. We are not allowed to let these kids walk by themselves. They told us we can hire a driver. Sir. We don't have the funding for that. My boss is trying to talk with DHS to see if they can help us figure this out. We have until the next school year. It's so irritating that because parents don't want a bus going through a "bad area" they think other kids aren't entitled a way to school. I'm worried about everything that's gonna happen. My boss is saying we may have to push back the date of when we were gonna up our age to 19 to be here. My boss is worried we may end up shutting down. She said that's the worst case scenario but I can't imagine having to shut down and shuffle these kids somewhere. We have kids that come here and find a foster home in a week. We also have 16 year olds who have been here since they were 14. The system is broken and it sucks.
Edit: I don't completely know the laws but I do know there are a lot of loopholes. For example students can take the city bus to school for free as long as they have their student i.d which was something else they told us we could do but again same issue as walking. We can't let them get on a city bus by themselves and they seriously think our kids getting on a school bus is the same as getting on a city bus full of strangers. Again they could run away or run into someone who is a danger to them. We can't let them take the city bus alone. I'm just hoping DHS can help us out.
