Is it necessary for parents to have to submit written permission for a child to go by a nickname?

I was browsing Reddit when I saw a post made by a Florida teacher who said their county is making students get written permission from parents to be called by a nickname. This is crazy to me. I found a news article which gives the gist:

So Madison canā€™t go by Maddie and Nicholas canā€™t go by Nick. Is this what conservatives mean when they say they donā€™t want the government in their business? Now kids canā€™t go by a preferred nickname? Thoughts?

No. This is explicitly to discriminate against trans students.

Spot on.

Can you imagine, as a teacher, having to worry about trivial stuff like this when you have much more important things to do likeā€¦teach?

But I donā€™t want to legally change my name. I go by my middle name (Lucille) because itā€™s easier for people to say. I donā€™t want to loose my first name. Just because I donā€™t use my first name doesnā€™t mean I donā€™t like it and want to change it.

Iā€™ve heard both, my sister and mom, talk to COā€™s while in prison. They called my mom by her preferred name, which is her middle name. She hates her first name. Even all her letters come to me with her preferred name. This BS has nothing to do with professionalism. It has everything to do with targeting queer students and their families.

What a ridiculous concept. This is what conservatives are wasting their time on

This is a waste of time and completely unnecessary for any reason.

This is absolutely ridiculous, and honestly just a way to not only discriminate against trans students, but basically force them to be outed to their parents/guardians before they may be ready to do that. Itā€™s truly sickening!

Yup. 100% this.

This is ridiculous. Parents don't own their children. You fucking bigots had better enjoy this level of control now because once your kids are grown you'll never see them again.

Of course this came out of Florida. This is for the anti trans people. This will get children hurt. The reason they donā€™t tell mommy and daddy things like this is because mommy and daddy arenā€™t accepting people and they KNOW that. Because no one would ever have an issue with a person named Jacob wanting to be called jake. This is for Ashley that wants to be called Steve. This is disgusting. Maybe parents should be good parents and they wonā€™t have to worry about this.

Letā€™s not pretend this is for the everyday Richard trying to be called Dick. This is for the families of queer students, itā€™s the continued efforts from the extreme right that is Florida, to make the lives of LGTBQIA* youth and their families less safe. This is not about family or keeping the involvement with family in a school environment. Itā€™s about outing queer youth, well really, itā€™s about keeping them in the closet and trying to eradicate their ā€œwokeā€ existence.

I remember all my school life I was only called by my full name, as it is in my passport. Not my nickname. Granted if my mom called me by my full name would make me think I did something wrong lol, but in school everyone was called by their full name, no nicknames. Starting from elementary school, to university. I donā€™t see anything wrong with that.

Nobody was ever called by their full name in schoolā€¦ thatā€™s weird af. Youā€™re telling me they called you by first and last name at all times? Come on now. I know people who have been called by their nicknames their entire livesā€¦ so much so that no one even knows their real name. This is Florida being homophobic and doing whatever they can to hurt the trans community.
