Spouses or close experience with schizophrenia ??
Hello,
My partner of 23 years and I just had our first child. We met in our teens and I am now 42 and he is 41.
We are in love with our baby daughter she’s now 12 weeks; but there is quite a lot of strife not only because we have our own 23 years of baggage to work through with each other
But mostly
He is schizophrenic, and it is something I have only learned in the last couple years with a true diagnosis In the past six months, something I myself was in denial although , I now realize he has had symptoms for about 18 years
After much much deliberation, rumination, and reflection on my own, with a therapist, educating myself and reading, etc.., I have absolutely decided to Stay in the relationship. There is far too much beautiful strength, and he is actually a wonderful father.
He still does not believe he himself has the illness, however. That is the biggest problem. He is finally seeing a psychiatrist, but he is refusing medication despite that.
He is my best friend, but I have endured so much pain, grief, stress and trauma, in addition with his anger issues that coincide with psychosis and delusional issues mental.
Please – does anybody else have a relatable or helpful experience that you could give any advice or thoughts on how one can continue to live their life with their best friend, their love, who suffers from such an extreme mental illness ?
Or just to share your story, perhaps at the least. ?
Thank you for reading, and good luck to all :^
